Tuesday, 28 June: Negotiations over Brexit, Vote sends shocks through markets, Petition calling for second EU vote with questionable numbers
28. Juni 2016

⊂ EUROPE ⊃

Negotiations over Brexit: Germany, France and Italy held talks in Berlin on Monday in the wake of Britain’s vote to leave the EU. On Tuesday, British Prime Minister David Cameron will speak to fellow European leaders in Brussels although he’s not expected to make a formal notification of intention to withdrawal from the bloc. It is not until Article 50 of the EU treaty has been invoked that negotiations on the form of Britain’s departure will begin. The 27 EU leaders will hold a summit on Wednesday with the notable absence of Cameron. EU Parliament party leaders have urged Cameron to immediately start Britain’s EU withdrawal process.

Brexit vote sends shocks through markets: Investors continued to withdraw from bank stocks on Monday, as the market was dunked in uncertainty and fears of an economic slowdown following the UK’s decision to leave the EU. European bank shares had their worst two-day fall on record and world stocks were on track for their worst two-day fall since the aftermath of the collapse of Lehman Brothers in late 2008. Goldman Sachs said that it expects to move headquarters from the UK to elsewhere in the EU, J.P. Morgan Chase has noted the same.

NGOs warn EU against migration plans: More than 100 NGOs have called upon the European Commission to put a stop to its controversial migration plan. The executive’s plan sees trade deals, development aid and other financial tools being used to limit the number of migrants reaching Europe from third countries. The NGOs have criticised the EU for focusing solely on curbing migration through its foreign policy and highlighted that this undermines the bloc’s credibility and authority when it comes to defending human rights. The organisations therefore called upon the member states to reject the Commission’s proposal. EU leaders will discuss the plan this week at a summit being held in Brussels.

EU to expand defence cooperation: Europe’s first security strategy in more than a decade is to push for closer EU defence cooperation, paving the way for multinational headquarters, military procurement and deployments to help cope with times of existential crisis. Facing a more aggressive Russia, a migrant crisis and failing states on its borders, the European Union needs to „act autonomously if and when necessary“, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini will tell EU leaders on Tuesday as she unveils a five-year global strategy plan.

I would imagine the Commission is led by an honorable, trustworthy man who, in a situation when we are facing the loss of a leg or arm, might go to the country and tell the Britons: ‘We want you to stay.

Petition calling for second EU vote with questionable numbers: An online petition signed by more than 3.5 million people calling for a second referendum on whether Britain should leave the EU was started by a Leave campaigner who says it has been „hijacked“ by unhappy Remain voters. Disappointed voters have flocked to sign the petition in the wake of the vote, crashing the official UK government website on at least one occasion and generating more signatures than on any other petition on the site. Any petition that gets more than 100,000 signatures is considered by Parliament’s Petitions Committee, which weighs whether to send the petition for debate by lawmakers.
