Poland accuses Belarus of preparing migrants to storm border fence: The Polish border guard has accused security forces on the Belarusian side of preparing stranded migrants there to storm the border fence. Many tents are said to have been cleared at the camp in Belarus directly opposite Poland’s border crossing of Kuznica. The reports cannot be independently verified since journalists and aid workers have been denied access to the area ever since Poland declared a state of emergency along its border. Poland, Lithuania and Latvia are considering asking NATO to hold emergency talks.

Hungary’s Orban warns against „German Europe“: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán wants the next German government to reduce Germany’s influence on the EU. „I hope that the German government that is now forming wants more of a European Germany and not a German Europe where they (the Germans) tell the others what to do,“ Orbán said on Sunday at a party congress of his right-wing nationalist party Fidesz in Budapest.

World leaders reach climate agreement at UN summit following two weeks of negotiations: Following two weeks of high-profile negotiations for urgent climate action, world leaders have come to an agreement at COP26 in Glasgow. The deal pushes countries to strengthen near-term climate targets and move away from fossil fuels faster. In last-minute changes, India’s climate negotiator Bhupender Yadav proposed that language calling for the “phaseout of unabated coal and inefficient fossil fuel subsidies” be changed to the “phase-down.” Fighting back tears, the president of the Cop26 climate summit, Alok Sharma, offered an emotional apology for the last-minute change, saying he was “deeply sorry” for how the event had panned out.

Germany pays tribute to soldiers, civilians killed in war: German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday laid a wreath for the victims of German war aggression as the country marked Volkstrauertag, or the people’s day of mourning. He said while Nazi-era crimes in western and central Europe form part of the country’s collective memory, many Germans struggle to recall the atrocities committed in eastern and southern Europe. Steinmeier also spoke of the unease felt by many Germans over the deployment of the present-day armed forces, the Bundeswehr, to conflict zones around the world, considering the country’s past.
